At Loll we have always been inspired by original design and when we first set out to make an Adirondack chair it had to be our own version. But truly we are all just making an iteration of the original Adirondack chair. The one that has always inspired us is the first, the Westport Chair designed by Thomas Lee in 1903 for his summer cottage overlooking Lake Champlain in Westport, NY. The Westport is undeniably the most iconic American outdoor lounge chair and the original design that spawned countless varieties all based on that 11 piece design statement. Lee was motivated to design a comfortable outdoor lounging chair for the purpose of watching summer sunsets over the lake with a drink resting on the arm. (Morning coffee and a newspaper worked wonderfully as well.) Hastily patented in 1905 by Lee’s friend and carpenter, Harry Bunnell, the chair was named the Westport Plank Chair and provided winter work for Bunnell’s company. The chairs sold well and Bunnell went on to manufacture the chairs for resale and continued to do so for more than 20 years.
The chair has an early modern simplicity and a rustic and craftsman appearance that is still viable today more than 100 years later. Wanting to be as original as we can be, we have never intentionally “swiped” someone else’s design. As a show of respect to Lee’s chair that really started a higher level of outdoor comfort and design, and now more than 10 years into Loll, we felt it was time to honor Lee’s chair with a Loll version that stays true to the original. Using recycled plastic instead of knot free clear wood, and incorporating our lock block hidden fastening system, is our contribution to this iconic outdoor chair. Perhaps for the first time in the chairs history we also added a bottle opener under the right arm to better fit its purpose. We also ran the front leg brace through the material for a nod to the prowess of modern CNC manufacturing. As we researched and studied and prototyped this chair we discovered so many parallels between its history and our company that it almost seems like Thomas Lee actually created a gift that keeps giving. We hope to continue that by sharing the Loll Westport Chair for another 100 years.
Loll products are made with 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) primarily from milk jugs. Milk jugs are used due to their lack of pigment so Loll’s vibrant colors can be created. As Loll material is a post-consumer recycled material, the medium to create the material does inevitably fluctuate. Although we do continuously strive for the best consistency possible, material color and texture may slightly vary from sheet to sheet and thus product to product may have slight variances. However, with that said, its nothing to worry about as we do our best to catch these inconsistencies in the shop. We also use USA made brass inserts mated with a 304 grade stainless steel bolt in all joinery. Richlite paper composite is used for structural elements in some pieces. Arbor Wood thermally modified wood can also be found in a select few products. All our materials are chosen for their high quality, no maintenance, performance and longevity. We want you to enjoy your furniture, not work on it.

Notes on Colors
We have tried our very best to accurately represent product colors on this website. However, due to the nature of the recycled plastic we use and electronic media, color of actual products may differ slightly from how they appear on this website on your particular computer. Please request a sample to see actual product color. Call or email us with a good ship-to address and your requested sample will be sent to you free of charge or submit a Color Sample Request.
What kind of material is Loll made out of?
Loll products are made with 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) primarily from milk jugs (#2 plastics) that you take out to the curb every week. Milk jugs are used due to their lack of pigment so Loll’s vibrant colors can be created. As Loll material is a post-consumer recycled material, the medium to create the material does inevitably fluctuate. Although we do continuously strive for the best consistency possible, material color and texture may slightly vary from sheet to sheet and thus product to product.
Is there ultraviolet (UV) stability in Loll material?
Yes. Loll products are manufactured with a highly weatherable HDPE sheet. Our post consumer resin includes a superior UV additive designed for plastics that improves exterior durability, greatly reducing characteristic surface degradation caused by sunlight and other UV light sources. Pigments / color concentrates are also added that are formulated with the best weathering pigments available in the market in a particular color-space.
Is fading covered under warranty?
No. The sun is very hard on materials that have constant direct exposure and we cannot guarantee the material color will not change over time. However, the HDPE that Loll uses has a UV stabilizer and is very resistant to fading. The color is not a finish coat; it is a pigment embedded in the material throughout. Some pieces use Richlite natural paper composite. Richlite will patina as it weathers and the lighter, natural colored material will redden or turn grayish. Black will remain black for years but with some apparent weathering. You will never have to paint or stain Loll Furniture. Our Warranty.
Will I see any change of color in my product?
The good news is that in most applications probably not. Further, darker colors are naturally much more resistant to change than lighter colors.
When products are placed in full direct sun, testing has shown NO significant change of color over time for:
- Charcoal Grey
- Chocolate Brown
- Cloud White
- Sky Blue
Testing has shown INCREASED change of color over time for:
- Apple Red
- Sunset Orange
- Leaf Green
Assembly & Maintenance
Loll furniture is mostly shipped flat packed to reduce the size of the box and thus the shipping costs. Some pieces are shipped knocked down (partially assembled) and a few products are shipped fully assembled. Check on the Product Page or contact Customer Service if you have any questions or concerns. We have gone to great lengths to make our furniture assembly very simple and even enjoyable and fulfilling. Your shipment will include easy-to-follow instructions and a tool to assemble the furniture. A Pro Tool Kit is available for purchase when you checkout and we recommend it if you have a larger multi-piece order. These are the same tools our furniture craftspeople use in the shop.
Loll furniture will not rot or splinter. It will never require paint or stain. Mostly you will find a simple hose-off will do the trick when it gets a little dirty. If there is a little more dirt, a simple wet rag and a natural spray cleaner should be sufficient to keep Loll furniture clean. A garden hose and a soft bristle brush or a microfiber towel works great if there is dirt embedded in the texture. You can purchase a Loll Cleaning Kit at checkout and you will have everything you need to keep your Loll furniture looking like new.
