The Campaign, led by Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, was organized by local residents in and around Ely, Minnesota, who are dedicated to creating a national movement to protect the clean water, clean air and forest landscape of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and its watershed from toxic pollution caused by mining copper, nickel and other metals from sulfide-bearing ore. The Boundary Waters is just a two hour drive from Duluth and the largest wilderness area east of the Rocky Mountains. A proposed sulfide mine, could adversely affect not only the BWCAW but also areas in the watershed extending to Duluth, our beloved Lake Superior and beyond.

COGGS has been improving cycling opportunities in the Duluth, MN, area since 1994. Its current focus is a project called the Duluth Traverse, a 100+ mile network of multiuse trail for mountain biking and other human-powered travel. Early settlers nearly destroyed this magnificent species, but many people have worked hard to save the last remnants and start them on the path to recovery.
